The Story of Sharing the Stage Club
For 10 years, Sharing the Stage has produced dynamic shows in Seattle and Vashon Island clubs. In February 2020, Snuff Redux headlined our most recent live show at Chop Suey, on Capitol Hill, with 12 student openers in bands or as soloists. Then COVID-19 became a part of our lives--we all went on quarantine and learning went remote.
In our enforced separation, it became clear that we needed to keep finding opportunities to connect, to support each other, and to share activities that would bring us joy. As one student said recently while introducing the song he had written for that week, "I wrote this song because I needed to hear it." To help meet the needs of these times, the weekly Sharing the Stage Club was formed.
A group of students has continued to meet online every single week since April 1, sharing songwriting prompts and new songs each week. Bree McKenna (Tacocat) and Robin Edwards (Lisa Prank) have joined each week as professionals to mentor students in songwriting and all aspects of performing and being in a band, and other professionals join from time to time, as well.
In July 2020, we produced an online show that included three headliners--The Black Tones, JENN CHAMPION, and Bree McKenna & Robin Edwards--and eight different student soloists/bands. (Learn about that show and watch the livestream video HERE.) The club is based at Seattle Academy, but it is open to students from any school, and since 2015, all our shows have included students from more than one school.
