Sharing the Stage is guided by the following core values:
On that basis, Sharing the Stage adopts the following mission:
To provide mentorship and build a musical community between adolescents who are seeking skills and validation of their interests, and music professionals who have traveled the same path themselves.
The activities and relationships of Sharing the Stage–rehearsals and performances–nurture students’ creativity and confidence, helping them build a positive self-image and sense of possibility as they shape who they want to be.
Ultimately, we envision a more compassionate society that respects, prioritizes, and funds activities that truly support the intellectual, emotional, and physical development of youth and–by extension–adults.
- A belief that openness and risk-taking are essential to creation.
- That the practice of extending kindness and respect in a community accelerates the growth of all.
- That trust assumed and demonstrated in a community allows the healthy expression of individual and collective voices and identities.
- To find ways to help every young person become conscious of their inherent genius, and then to assist in its expression and development.
- More respect, appreciation, and celebration of kids for who they are; for what they are trying to figure out about who they are; and for what they are curious or passionate about.
- More opportunities for kids to develop their own creative voices and to belong to creative communities.
- More opportunities for kids to learn from peers and from elders; to be surprised and to learn in unexpected ways.
- More opportunities for kids to achieve and to own genuine successes or failures as learning experiences in areas they care about.
- More opportunities for adults to be mentors and to experience the pleasure of teaching and sharing expertise.
